Fox Butterfield, China: Alive in the Bitter Sea

Bill Buckley described this book as a masterpiece when the author was on his show, and I concur.  Written in the late 1970s by an American newspaper reporter, who mixed amongst the locals and spoke the language, this book offers an outstanding source of information pertaining to first hand accounts of both current events and the preceding two decades.

Milton Friedman, A Monetary History of the United States

Marquis James, The Life of Andrew Jackson

Empires of the Silk Road, Christopher Beckwith

A quasi-encyclopedic history of Eurasia from the 2nd millennium BC up to the close of the 20th century AD
